biking today in the bois de boulogne one of those rare free lunchtimes, surrounded by bare trees, their shadow and light, i thought about the process of seeing. how light enters the eye and the photoreceptors in the retina collect the light and send signals to a network of neurons that then generate electrical impulses that go to the brain. and the brain interprets these signals into sight. all in the space of a fraction of time. simply marvellous.
unverifiable trivia: i recall hearing that the eye doesn’t see everything every instant, rather, the brain makes up for the gaps by providing coherent information that helps us see things as a whole. the metaphorical implications!

True dat. Of an infinite amount of information, only a small percentage can actually be perceived, and then there’s a processing lag as the brain tries to make it coherent. That’s how movies work - a series of still pics appear to be in motion.
